Cardinal’s shortstop Brendan Ryan had surgery on his right wrist on Feb. 9 and was unable to do anything in the batting cage until about a week ago. He saw his first live pitching on Saturday and didn’t miss a beat.

Ryan went 2-for-3, including a double, and was perfect in the field in the Cardinals’ 6-5 win over the Mets. He struck out in his third at-bat before leaving the game. Even Adam Wainwright straightened himeself out going five scoreless innings. He talked about all of his pitches coming out effortlessly.

As far as the opening day starter, manager Tony LaRussa said that no decision has been made on whether Wainwright or Chris Carpenter will be the Redbirds’ Opening Day starter, nor has a decision been made on who will be the fifth starter in the rotation when the team breaks camp in about two weeks.
