The senate has started working on a proposal to get much more information from women getting abortions. Sponsor Tom Dempsey of St. Charles says the information will help the state better understand the reasons for abortions.

His bill would collect informationa bout the kind of procedure done, the reasons for seeking the abortion including medical, social, economic and other factors including the kind of family planning the woman was using when she was impregnated.

Dempsey says the information would be given voluntarily and the women’s identities would be protected.. Opponents charge the information-gathering would be a further invasion of the privacy of women seeking abortions. The senate has started debate on the bill but does not appear close to a vote. Dempsey has set the bill aside because he ran out of debate time in the first go-around.
