Blues forward David Backes, fresh off returning from a silver medal performance for Team USA on Sunday, assisted on a goal and later added his 14th of the season as the Blues pick up a 5-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes to start a six game road trip.

The Blues have played close games with Phoenix this season, but last night the Blues had the advantage. After the Coyotes scored just 3:43 into the game, the Blues rattled off the next five goals.

TJ Oshie scored his 14th on assists from Backes and Paul Kariya to tie the score at 1-1. Jay McClement scored at 14:02 to give St. Louis the lead for good. In the second period, the Blues scored three times on 10 shots with Andy McDonald scoring his 20th and Brad Boyes, his 11th around Backes’ goal.

Chris Mason stopped 37 of 39 shots to move to 21-17-8 on the season. The Blues are in Dallas on Thursday.
