The St . Louis Cardinals have locked up their second basemen, signing Skip Schumaker to a two year, $4.7 million deal. He started 124 games at second base and hit .307 while learning a new position. Schumaker was converted from an outfielder to an infielder before last season. He had a fielding percentage of .983 while making nine errors in 544 chances at second base.
General Manager John Mozeliak was impressed with how Schumaker helped fill two roles for the Cardinals last season. “Heading into spring training last year our club had uncertainties at both leadoff hitter and the second base position. Skip answered both those questions. The transformation he made as an outfielder moving to second was truly remarkable and a testament to his dedication and athleticism. He is the kind of hard-working player that the Cardinals and our fans appreciate and we are thrilled to have with us for the next two years.”
