The Chicago Bears, known for being a smash mouth, run the football type of team since the early days of Walter Payton may be having an identity crisis. Yesterday the Bears hired former Rams head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Martz as their offensive coordinator.

Growing up a Bears fan, I welcome this move although Bears’ head coach Lovie Smith says the offense will not change much. It has to…especially under Martz. Martz gets a lot of credit for building the Greatest Show on Turf in St. Louis and in helping launch Kurt Warner’s career. Perhaps he’ll help turn around Jay Cutler’s career where Chicago has become a graveyard for NFL quarterbacks.

Martz will also be back with Smith, the Bears’ head coach. It was Martz who hired Lovie as the Rams’ defensive coordinator. Martz did not coach last year, but was an offensive coordinator in San Francisco and Detroit after he was fired as Rams head coach.
