Mine fire under investigation

January 25, 2010 By [email protected]

Three miners have been rescued from a lead and zinc mine in southeast Missouri after a fire. The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration is investigating the fire at Doe Run Company’s Viburnum #29 minue near Bunker.

MSHA district manager Eddie Lopez says the miners moved about half-a-mile to a refuge chamber after a 30-ton diesel-powered ore-hauling truck caught fire. They waited for the rescue crew to be lowered almost 600 feet into the mine to be escorted out without injury. The fire was last Thursday. The mine was closed during the weekend but is able to operate while the investigation goes on.
