Why not just call them the West New England Chiefs? GM Scott Pioli, who helped build New England’s Super Bowl teams, completed his daily double of coordinators by hiring Romeo Crennel as the Chiefs new defensive coordinator. This comes a week after Pioli and head coach Todd Haley named Charlie Weis as the offensive coordinator.

Crennel was most recently head coach of the Cleveland Browns where he went 24-40 in four seasons. He was fired after the 2008 season and took off last year to have hip surgery. Crennel also had interest from the New York Giants, but sources for NFL.com say Crennel’s first choice was Kansas City because of their 3-4 scheme.

While the Chiefs showed a little bit of life at the end of the season thanks in large part to the success of Jamaal Charles, I hope that Pioli understands it’s not just coordinators who will make this work. He’s going to need to bring in some players particularly some guys who can catch the ball.

I like the pickup. Weis and Crennel know what they’re doing as coordinators and with a year under Todd Haley’s belt, the coaching staff is coming together and could become one of the best staffs in the NFL next year as the assistants get tweaked some more.
