The Central Missouri Mules 27 game home court win streak came to an end and so will their number one ranking in the country as they lost to #13 Fort Hays State 81-71 in Warrensburg, MO. The Mules were up by as many as 10 with just under 13 minutes to play in the game and many of the fans were sniffing a 28th straight win, but the Tigers went on an 18-3 run to take the game over.
The Tigers’ comeback came thanks to the guard play of Willie Hassel and Dominique Jones. Jones finished with 28 points and Hassel scored all of his 14 points in the second half. Hassel hit three, three-pointers in that big FHS run.
Up to that point, it was a back and forth contest. UCM jumped out to an 11-2 lead but Ft. Hays fought back and had the lead with 6:47 to go in the first half. The Mules’ Sanijay Watts, the reigning MIAA player of the week, scored 13 of the Mules’ first 20 points.
Central Missouri finished the first half with a 6-0 run to lead 34-33 at the half and built the lead to double digits, before FHS’ comeback. The Tigers doubled teamed Watts in the second half and he still finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds, but head coach Kim Anderson thought others could have stepped up to help.
When that didn’t happen, the Tigers took over. The Mules ended up shooting just 34% in the second half.
