Funeral services for Highway Patrol Corporal Dennis Engelhard of Weldon Spring will be held Wednesday in Brookfield.

Engelhard became the 28th trooper to die in the line of duty with the Patrol when he was hit by a car near Eureka on Christmas Day. Engelhard was investigating a non-injury traffic crash on Interstate 44 near Eureka when the driver on another car lost control of his vehicle on the icy road. The crash is still being investigated.

Engelhard is the first trooper to die in the line of duty since September, 2005–a year that saw four troopers killed. He was 49 and had been with the patrol for ten years.

The public visitation for Corporal Engelhard will begin at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Wright-Baker-Hill Funeral home in Brookfield. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Park Baptist Church Fellowship Building in Brookfield.

Engelhard was one of 11 Christmas holiday weekend traffic fatalities in Missouri.
