University of Central Missouri head football coach Willie Fritz accepted the head coaching position at Sam Houston State on Friday, and a national search for his replacement is underway, according to Athletic Director Jerry Hughes.
Fritz finished his 13-year run with the Mules as the all-time winningest coach in school history with a 97-47 overall record. This will be his third stint as a coach at SHSU, serving as a graduate assistant from 1984-85, and as a full-time assistant from 1991-92.
“We would like to thank coach Fritz for his 13 years of dedicated service to UCM Mules football.” Hughes stated. “He is a first-class person and coach and we wish him nothing but the best at Sam Houston State.”
The search for the 27th head football coach at Central Missouri will begin immediately.
