Former Truman State alum and Central Missouri co-defensive coordinator Gregg Nesbitt was introduced as the 22nd head coach in Truman State history on Monday. Nesbitt was also a one-time top high school football coach in Missouri.

Nesbitt takes over for Aaron Vicko, who was named interim coach after Shannon Currier was fired. There is no word if Vicko will stay with the staff. He was also the offensive coordinator.

Nesbitt, a native of Hannibal, MO. played his college ball in the late 70’s at Truman State. Nesbitt returned to his hometown and was the head coach for Hannibal High School from 1984-89 leading the Pirates to the state playoffs in his final three seasons. Nesbitt also served as the school’s Athletic Director.

In 1990, Nesbitt returned to Kirksville and was on Eric Holm’s staff as linebackers coach and defensive coordinator. The Bulldogs, during those three seasons, were 23-9.

In 1993, Nesbitt left Truman to become the head coach at Columbia’s Hickman High School. In 13 seasons, Nesbitt would take the Kewpies to six Missouri Class Six playoff appearances, including a 2004 State Championship.

In 10 of those 13 years, Hickman was ranked in the top 10 in Missouri’s largest football class in 10 of the 13 years that Nesbitt coached there. Nesbitt was named the Missouri Coach of the Year by the Associated Press 1994, the National Federation of High School Sports Regional Coach of the Year and a nominee for the NFHS National Coach of the Year Award.

Nesbitt moved back to the college ranks in 2006 as defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Central Methodist University (NAIA) before joining the Bulldogs rival Central Missouri in Warrensburg as co-defensive coordinator.
