After the Notre Dame Fighting Irish finished 6-6, losing their last four games of the season, the school let head coach Charlie Weis go after five seasons and a 35-27 record overall. It seems obvious that Weis will head back to the NFL as an offensive coordinator…how about Kansas City.
On Monday, head coach Todd Haley said neither he nor the team has contacted Weis. Haley said there would not be any coaching changes in the middle of the season. That’s fair, but that still doesn’t mean that GM Scott Pioli or Haley are not interested. Haley worked together as assistants with the New York Jets. Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli was the Patriots’ vice president of player personnel when Weis was the offensive coordinator in New England.
ESPN is reporting Weis as saying that he has been contacted by at least six NFL teams already. This could be a good move for the Chiefs, although there is no doubt Weis is a hot commodity.
There is familiarity with Weis among Pioli and Haley. With Haley calling offensive plays in his first year, it would be right for Haley to turn the play calling over to Weis. Say what you will about his job at ND, but Weis knows how to run a NFL offense.
