Royals starting pitcher Zack Greinke and Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright won the awards for top pitchers in their respective leagues as voted on by their peers in balloting for the Players Choice Awards.

Greinke was just named by The Sporting News as the AL’s top pitcher and you would have to think would be the favorite for the Cy Young Award, which will be announced November 17th. Let’s hope the baseball writers who vote get it right. The players turned in their votes in the middle of September and the writers after the season. They should not have been influenced by Greinke’s final start of the year on FOX-TV against the Twins in which he was less than stellar.

Toronto’s Roy Halladay and New York’s CC Sabathia were the other finalists in the AL. Wainwright was the National League’s most outstanding pitcher. He beat out teammate Chris Carpenter and San Francisco’s Tim Lincecum. I understand voting happens before the post-season and I’ve said all along Carpenter should be the guy who wins the Cy Young, but after watching Wainwright in the post-season, he’s certainly the guy who may deserve the award.
