Reporter John Marsh of Missourinet affiliate KWOS, who was at the Cole County Courthouse for this morning’s hearings, reports the judge later held an open hearing on whether next month’s proceeding should be open. That proceeding will determine whether the juvenile should face the charge as an adult. Marsh reports the defense attorney argued an open hearing would not be in the best interests of his client, or the general public, or in the best interests of a fair trial. .

Authorities have given no identifying information about the suspect other than age. Unofficial sources say the suspect, however, is a girl.

The funeral for the victim, 9-year old Elizabeth Olten, is this afternoon.
