A big letdown for the Cardinals last night as they not only lose to the Brewers, but they may have also lost a shot at playing their first post season game next week at home.
Adam Wainwright threw six strong innings, but the bullpen could not hold the lead and Milwaukee beat St. Louis 12-6.
The Cardinals started fast getting two runs in the first inning thanks to RBI hits from Matt Holliday and Ryan Ludwick.
The Redbirds would extend the lead in the third when they would score three more runs. Colby Rasmus led off with a walk and would score on a double by Alvert Pujols. Pujols would score after a double by Ryan Ludwick who would later score on a single by Jadier Molina.
In the fourth, Wainwright would help his own cause by leading off with a triple. He would score thanks to a single from Colby Rasmus.
The Brewers would score their first run in the sixth.
But the turning point of the game would come in the top of the seventh when Kyle McClellan came into the game. He would get only one out, and the Brewers would score five runs. Jason Motte would enter later in the inning and throw a wild pitch which allowed another run to score.
In the eighth, the bleeding for the bullpen would continue as Motte, Dennys Reyes and Mitchell Boggs would let five more runs cross the plate.
Wainwright lost his chance to become the first 20 game winner in the major leagues, and at the same time, may have also lost his shot at a Cy Young award.
The Cardinals now trail Colorado and Philadelphia by one game for the second best record in the National League.
Game two of the series is this afternoon with Kyle Lohse getting the start for St. Louis against Milwaukee’s Carlos Villanueva.
First pitch is 12:10.
