Cole County Circuit Judge Richard Callahan has been nominated by President Obama to be the next federal prosecutor in St. Louis.

Callahan, who served for years as county prosecutor in Jefferson City, will need to be confirmed by the Senate to begin serving as the new US Attorney for Eastern Missouri . Callahan has handled some high-profile cases since becoming Cole County Circuit Judge in 2002. He threw out the state voter ID law approved by lawmakers and upheld the legislature’s new school funding formula. The State Supreme Court confirmed his rulings in both cases.

Callahan is from St. Louis and moved to Jefferson City as a special prosecutor in 1979. He was elected Cole County prosecutor in 1986. He is a Democrat and is 62-years-old.
