When Royals pitcher Zack Greinke set the Royals all-time strikeout record in the eighth inning, he had no idea what the fuss was all about.  What he didn’t realize was that he broke Mark Gubicza’s single game record of 14, by fanning his 15 th Indian of the night on his way to a 6-2 victory.

Indians manager Eric Wedge called it one of the best performances he’s ever seen.  "That’s about as good as I’ve seen any pitcher in my time here at this level, he had special stuff tonight. He always has special stuff."

Greinke allowed two earned runs over his eight innings of work and lowered his American League-leading ERA to 2.43.  Greinke struck out four through the first, two innings. He struck out Matt LaPorta swinging in the third for his fifth strikeout and added two more in the fourth.  Greinke struck out the side in the fifth and then added two more in the sixth and seventh innings.  Finally, Greinke exacted revenge on Andy Marte, who broke up a shutout bid in the sixth inning, by mowing him down for the record in the eighth.

Miguel Olivo and Mitch Maier went deep for Kansas City.  It was Maier’s first in the majors.  He and Mike Jacobs, had two RBI apiece.

Greinke talks about his success, Maier decides what he’ll remember most…Greinke’s record or his first MLB homer and Indians manager Eric Wedge discusses if Greinke is Cy-Young worthy.
