State senator Jeff Smith of St. Louis has resigned from the Senate after being caught up in a political scandal during his 2004 run for a seat in Congress.

Smith is part of a federal inquiry into the distribution of anonymous fliers criticizing ultimate winner Russ Carnahan. Carnahan had filed a complaint with the Federal Elections Commission during the campaign.

Senate Majority Leader Kevin Engler (R-Farmington) says Smith has made "some serious mistakes and will be held accountable," but that Smith should be recognized for his Senate accomplishments and his hard work on behalf of his constituents.

Also implicated is Representative Steve Brown, of St.Louis, who is expected to plead guilty this afternoon to a federal charge of conspiracy to obstruct justice.

Both lawmakers are in their first terms.
