The most exciting part of the Royals-Mariners’ game from Wednesday night was when a little kitty cat got onto the field and the grounds crew chased the flashy feline around the field.  Kyle Davies could have used nine lives in his return to the majors.

Davies gave up eight runs in less than four innings of work in his first start with the big league club since June.  Davies didn’t help his own cause in the fourth.  Davies threw a wild pitch and had a throwing error as the Mariners sent 10 batters to plate scoring six runs on six hits.

The Royals bats came alive.  Alex Gordon hit a two run homer in the third that tied the game at 2-2.  Billy Butler also hit a two run shot in the fourth after the Mariners crooked number.

In the fifth inning, the little cat made his way onto the field and while it was a brief delay, the fans were on their feet cheering for the cat.  It reminded me of the 1969 Cubs who were in first place ahead of the Mets, when a black cat ran into the Cubs’ dugout at Shea Stadium.  The Cubs withered away and the Mets won the World Series.

This cat wasn’t black, but let’s hope it doesn’t bring more bad luck to the Royals.  They are now 1-10 at home since the All-Star break and have lost 20 of 25 and are now 25 games under .500, a season low.
