The safety of our food is drawing a number of health, education, and food production experts to a special food safety summit tomorrow in Jefferson City.

It’s been sixty years since Missouri’s food safety laws had a big overhaul. The Departments of Health and Agriculture think it’s time to consider one, given the increased amount of food processing, international trade, and homeland security issues that affect our food supply.

A lot of food safety regulation comes down from Washington. But state health director Margaret Donnelly says Missouri’s food laws can complement federal programs nard standards.

She says Missourians each far more processed foods than they did when the state food safety laws were written in the 1940s. She hopes the food safety summit gets everybody involved in the process in one room to reexamine state laws and policies. The summit will produce recommendations for the agencies and for the legislature to turn into law in 20-10.
