Cardinals let lead slip away to Brew Crew

July 9, 2009 By admin Leave a Comment

The Cardinals dropped a 5-4 game at Milwaukee last night on an infield single by Prince Fielder in the 8 th inning with the bases loaded and two outs that scored the winning run.  The Cardinals threatened in the ninth loading the bases, but Yadier Molina grounded into a force play to end the game.

The Cardinals took a 4-1 lead in the fourth when they scored four off former Cardinals Jeff Suppan.  Then, the Brewers came back with three of their own in the bottom of the inning of Todd Wellemeyer including a two run homer by Mat Gamel.

Jason Motte took the loss after getting the first two hitters out in the 8 th , he gave up a single and two walks before Dennys Reyes, the lefty came on to face Fielder.

The Cardinals sent eight players to the plate in the fourth.  Yadier Molina doubled in Ryan Ludwick who walked to lead off the inning.  After Joe Thurston walked, Wellemeyer bunted Molina and Thurston over who scored on Brendan Ryan’s double to make it a 3-1 game.  Then Skip Schumaker singled into right after the ball deflected off Fielder’s glove which gave St. Louis the 4-1 lead.

Wellemeyer didn’t help himself or get much help in the field again.  Mike Cameron walked ahead of Gamel’s two run shot to right.  Later in the inning a Jason Kendall single turned into an additional two base error after Chris Duncan botched the play.  Kendall scored on a Craig Counsell single.
