Utility player Ryan Freel was picked up by Royals who will send a player to be named later and cash considerations to the Chicago Cubs.  He’ll join the team in Detroit today.  The 33 year old was with Baltimore at the beginning of the year.  He’s hitting .140 in 23 games this year and he’s been on the DL twice.

Manager Trey Hillman thinks that when Freel is healthy, he can be a valuable player who can play multiple positions.   Freel could play center to help relieve Mitch Maier who has been getting a lot of playing time since the injury to Coco Crisp.

Freel played in just 48 games last year with Cincinnati and has dealt with injuries most of his career, but did put up some solid numbers in the mid 2000’s with the Reds.
