Jacobs’ homer beat Tigers

July 7, 2009 By admin Leave a Comment

Willie Bloomquist went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs, but it was Mike Jacobs’ 11th home run of the year off Tigers’ reliever Fernando Rodney in the 9th inning to give the Royals a 4-3 series opening win in Detroit.

The Tigers tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the 8th off Royals’ reliever Ramon Colon. Ryan Raburn doubled with two outs to tie the game right after the Royals took a 3-2 lead in the top of the inning.  After Joel Zumaya came on in relief of Detroit starter Armando Gallaraga, he gave up a single to Miguel Olivo and a walk to David DeJesus.  With one out, Bloomquist tripled to score two.

Bloomquist hit his second home run of the year when he hit a solo shot in the fifth inning.

Gil Meche got a no-decision after going 5.2 innings allowing two runs on five hits and five walks while striking out five.
