It was a pitching duel as the top two teams in the NL Central met yesterday, with the Milwaukee Brewers defeating the St. louis Cardinals 1-0 in 10 innings to open up a three-game series at Miller Park.

Starters Chris Carpenter of the Cardinals and Milwaukee’s Yovani Gallardo were stellar but each earned no-decisions.

Carpenter took a perfect game into the seventh and struck out 10 over eight innings of two-hit ball. Gallardo had a no-hitter broken up in the top of the sixth inning and also allowed just two hits over eight innings.

Bill Hall singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning off St. Louis reliever Kyle McClellan who took the loss. Carlos Villanueva picked up the win after tossing a perfect 10th.

The Cardinals are now a game back in the NL Central and have lost two in-a-row after a five-game winning streak.

Game 2 of the series is tonight as the Cardinals will start Adam Wainwright against Jeff Suppan.
