Washington University in Saint Louis Law Professor Tom Schweich remains on the sidelines, considering a run for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by retiring Senator Christopher “Kit” Bond. And, this protege of former Senator and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Danforth doesn’t expect to make a decision until later in the summer.

“I think the decision has to be made this summer,” said Schweich. “But I’m not going to rush into the decision.”

Schweich is a political newcomer, a fresh face on Missouri’s political scene, but he thinks that might actually be a benefit to his possible candidacy.

“A lot of people think we need a fresh face in this election,” said Schweich. “And you can’t be both known and a fresh face at the same time.”

Schweich, a diplomat in the Bush Administration, might be a fresh face on the political scene but he brings credentials to the table.

“What I want people to know is that I’m an experienced ambassador, foreign policy experience, experienced litigator, a diplomat,” said the former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan. “I’ve written three books, including one that predicted the financial crash that we have right now, so I have a lot of credibility on that issue, as well.”

The most important thing affecting his decision is whether his entry in the race will keep the seat in Republican hands.

“We have got to have a candidate that can win,” said Schweich. “[Democratic candidate] Robin Carnahan is a formidable opponent. It looks like she’ll run unopposed.”

Schweich believes he can raise the money needed and articulate the issues. He insists he will not run if it looks as though his entry will harm the GOP’s chances of winning the seat.
