William Jewell allows 18 runs in one inning

May 13, 2009 By admin Leave a Comment

William Jewell College opened up the 2009 NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round with a 9-5 win over Houston-Victoria Tuesday afternoon to advance to the winner’s bracket.  Later in the evening, the Cardinals were handed a 28-2 loss by the No. 1 Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals.

The Chaps set a school single inning record with an 18 run eighth inning.  The Chaps, leading 10-2, set a team record with 16 runs off of 12 hits before an out was ever recorded. WJC pitchers Michael McClanahan and Kyle Wampler combined to allow 14 of the runs while facing 14 batters and each were unable to record an out. McClanahan also hit four batters, hitting Bo Merrell twice in the inning. Merrell eventually struck out in his third at-bat of the inning, as the opening 19 batters of the inning reached base safely.

William Jewell will play again Wednesday evening at 6pm.  To follow the Cardinals, click here .
