The Royals were swept out of first place.   Although percentage points behind Detroit, it was a throwing error on a potential double play that led to the Royals 4-3 defeat against the Angels.  The Royals also blew a 3-0 lead.

Coco Crisp singled in the second, stole and scored on a Mark Teahen double into the left-field corner.  In the fourth, Billy Butler doubled to the left-field wall and scored on an Alberto Callaspo tripled to right-center field who scored when Miguel Olivo followed with an RBI single.

The only run against Royals starter Kyle Davies came in the fourth. Gary Matthews Jr. led off with a single and later scored on Kendry Morales’ sacrifice fly. Davies left after Morales led off the seventh with a single and was relieved by Wright.

Morales was thrown out trying to steal but Wright walked Mike Napoli and then threw Howie Kendrick’s comebacker into center field.  With runners on  second and third both came in on a Jeff Mathis single to tie the game.  Mathis later scored on a squeeze bunt from Chone Figgins.
