The St. Louis Cardinals today placed RHP Chris Carpenter on the 15-day disabled list and optioned RHP Brad Thompson to Memphis (AAA).  To fill the two roster spots, the club recalled RHP’s Mitchell Boggs and Chris Perez from Triple-A.

Carpenter was removed from last night’s game prior to the bottom of the fourth inning with a strain to his left rib cage.   He won’t undergo an MRI now until Thursday back in St. Louis.  The team leaves for Chicago after this afternoon’s game with Arizona.

Tony LaRussa is pretty down about the situation.  We don’t talk about it a lot, because pretty soon some guys might start thinking, ‘Oh, we can’t win without him.’ The players respect what he means to us — which is a lot. He’s great. At least it’s not his arm; guess the glass is half-full, rather than half-empty."
