Royals postponed, bundle up for Cardinals

April 6, 2009 By admin Leave a Comment

The Phillies and Braves kicked off the major league season Sunday night, but the Royals will have to wait another day, while the Cardinals will be pushing to get Monday’s game with Pittsburgh.

The Royals’ season opener at Chicago has been postponed with snow and temperatures in the upper 20’s expected today in the Windy City.  It will not be much better in St. Louis where the Cardinals host the Pirates today with the first pitch schedule for 3:15.  The game time forecast calls for a 50% chance of snow flurries, 39 degree temps and winds blowing at 20 mph.

They’re expected to do everything they can to get the game in today since the Cardinals start the season with 14 games without a day off and only one day off in the month of April.

As long as the weather is dry, they’ll give it a go, so wear layers if you’re heading out to Busch Stadium.

Adam Wainwright will make the start today with a lineup that will feature new changes and new positions.  The middle infield will look different with Skip Schumaker at 2nd and Khalil Greene at SS.  David Freese, who battled back from an Achilles tendon issue to win the third base job, will cover the hot corner, but neither Schumaker or Freese will start today.  Manager Tony LaRussa expected to start Brendan Ryan at second and have him lead off with Brian Barden starting at third and batting eighth.
