The state has performance standards for students….How about some for teachers? The Senate has endorsed the idea. Senator Yvonne Wilson’s proposed teacher standards say each public school district will develop teacher standards that require students to be active learners, that teachers use various assessment tools to monitor and manage learning, that the teacher keeps students on the job, professionally communicates with the community, keeps current on instructional knowledge and acts in a responsible manner. The standards are generally-worded and open to diverse interpretation. But Wilson says they’ll fill an important gap.

Although Wilson agrees teachers who don’t measure up should not be in the classroom and maybe not even in education, there are no penalties in the proposal and the standards could vary from district to district. It’s part of a bigger education bill working its way through the Senate.
