SBU soccer coach becomes a "Survivor"

February 12, 2009 By Bill Pollock Leave a Comment

SBU soccer coach Ben Wade (photo courtesy SBU Athletics) Fans of the TV show Survivor, which premieres tonight on CBS will have a local Missouri guy to follow.  He’s Ben Wade, the women’s soccer coach at Southwest Baptist University.

I found out about Ben just about a month ago and talked for about 20 minutes.  It was an interesting conversation because someone from CBS had to join us on the call because Ben could not say anything about the show.  He could talk about everything leading up to his flight down to Brazil.
He’s not allowed to comment on the game until he’s either eliminated or the final episode airs.

The most interesting part of my conversation with Ben was when he talked about how he almost didn’t go on the show because CBS wanted him to leave in the middle of his season and he didn’t want to leave the girls on the team.  What made it even more difficult was that he couldn’t tell them where or why he was going.  It was a difficult decision, but with prayer and the support of an administrator at the school he decided to give it a shot.

If you go to my Press Podcast , scroll down about four stories and you’ll find my podcast with coach Wade.  While you’re there, check out some of my other Podcasts as well.

Enjoy.
