The first 100 days of a new presidency are seen as an opportunity for the new man in the White House to move forward his agenda. And, Gwyneth Williams – a Webster University professor of history, politics, and international relations – says President Barack Obama must use those 100 days wisely and must not take Congress for granted, even though there are solid Democratic majorities in both the House and Senate.
Williams says that while Barack Obama’s popularity is very high right now, his political influence can only go down. She says now is the time to spend political capital. She cautions Obama cannot be seen to be moving without collaboration with members of his own party as well as Republicans in Congress. While this is a great opportunity to strike, Obama must take advantage of this time to build up good will at the Capitol.
