That’s the first time the Cardinals meet the Cubs for the 2009. It’s also going to be the first time that Aaron Miles will face the club he spent three years with. Come April, when the Cards and Cubs meet seven times, Miles could have a little extra motivation.
Last week, Miles signed a two year $4.9 million deal with Chicago after three seasons of being one of Tony LaRussa’s best bench players who eventually made his way into the starting lineup.
Miles told the Chicago Sun-Times he was a little miffed by the fact that twice the Cardinals refused to sign Miles to long term deals and refusing him arbitration. It was only until late in the process that the Cardinals came callling back for Miles, but at that point Miles already moved on and was ready to join the Cubs.
As far as the Cards’ rival, the back to back Central Division Champs have Miles who will fill a utility role left by Mark DeRosa who was traded to Cleveland for three minor league pitchers.
I’m a little surprised that the Cardinals didn’t attempt to re-sign Miles given their need for help in the middle infield. I realize the Cardinals are looking for shortstop help, but Miles filled a nice role in St. Louis and this is just one more position to fill on the team.
