Senate Republicans are making it clear they are prepared to work with Governor-elect Jay Nixon to deal with Missouri’s economic challenges and to do so without raising taxes.

Senator Charlie Shields (R-St. Joseph), who will take over as Senate Leader in January, says Senate Republicans and the Governor-elect are on the same page in believing that the state cannot tax itself out of the current economic situation because higher taxes kill jobs. Shields says it is important to look at ways of creating good jobs, insisting that improving Missouri’s higher education picture is a big part of that.

Shields says there are several job creation tools the state has at its disposal, with expansion of the Quality Jobs program – which creates high paying jobs – a key component of that effort.
