The State Transportation Department (MoDOT) is moving forward with plans build a new bridge spanning the Mississippi River at St. Louis. Greg Horn, MoDOT’s Mississippi River Bridge Director, says the process is moving forward with the design phase.

Horn points out all the hurdles – environmental and otherwise – have been cleared and the project is on target with construction set to begin a little more than a year from now in early 2010. Horn says construction is expected to take four to six years, meaning the first vehicle could cross the new bridge sometime between 2014 and 2016.

The new Mississippi River Bridge will replace the Poplar Street Bridge as the Interstate 70 link between Missouri and Illinois, though the Poplar Street Bridge will remain open to traffic.
