It’s not too early to start decorating for Christmas, even if those decorations include a fresh tree. Pine trees are like fresh flowers and they’ll last as long as you care for them.
But unlike flowers do not add preservatives or additives to the water, said State Tree Growers Association Secretary Teresa Meier.
"The best thing to do is just to use warm water," she said. "Also, keep your water bowl for your stand very full. It’s important that you have a large water holding stand. An 8 foot tree when you first bring it into the house can easily drink a gallon of water a day."
Meier recommends checking the water basin in the morning and at night. That will keep the tree from drying out and creating a fire hazard.
"Christmas trees are a very safe, natural product to have in your home," she said. "The problem comes from either candles too close to the tree or if you don’t check out your lights before you put them on the tree."
Meier says even if you check the lights do not leave them on overnight or when you aren’t home.
