Free agent signing begins today in baseball

November 14, 2008 By admin Leave a Comment

Royals GM Dayton Moore has already said they can’t spend any more money with arbitration and other salary concerns with the current roster.  The Cardinals are expected to put out some calls to middle infielders like Rafael Furcal, Orlando Hudson and Edgar Renteria plus look for some left handed relievers.

This Cardinal team blew 30 saves and with guys like Trevor Hoffman from San Diego and Brian Fuentes from Colorado out there, GM John Mozeliak has mentioned nothing about those pitchers.  Fuentes could close and take care of their left handed needs, yet the Cardinals won’t spend that type of money on him.

Also out there is Kerry Wood.  The Cubs traded for Kevin Gregg who was Florida’s closer most of last year, meaning they won’t resign Kerry Wood, who proved he can stay healthy as a closer.  I don’t see anyone in the organization ready to take that job.

With Felipe Lopez a free agent, but someone that Tony LaRussa wants to keep and Brendan Ryan already in house, I would push middle infield down the line a bit until they get that bullpen straightened out.

Other Cardinal news.  Ryan Ludwick and Albert Pujols won Silver Slugger awards.  I’m also hearing a rumor the Cubs are close to a deal with San Diego for starting pitcher Jake Peavy.  Atlanta is also in the mix to pick up Peavy.
