State agriculture officials are in the process of learning the number of farms involved what is known as agritourism, which gives farmers the opportunity to add revenue by inviting Missourians to see what it’s like to spend time on a working farm.

Sarah Gehring with AgriMissouri – a program within the Missouri Department of Agriculture – says an effort is underway to learn how many people are visiting the farms and the farms hosting the visitors.

Gehring says there is added economic impact to agritourism in that people visiting farms are eating at restaurants, buying gasoline, and staying in hotels. The Department of Agriculture is working in partnership with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism at the University of Missouri, which is conducting a survey to come up with the information.
