It worked last week against the New York Jets for a couple of reasons.  The Chiefs don’t have much of a running game with Larry Johnson out of the lineup.  Quarterback Tyler Thigpen ran the spread offense while in college at Coastal Carolina.  The Jets didn’t expect it.

How will it work this week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, behind defensive guru Monte Kiffin?

Head coach Herm Edwards told the Kansas City Star that he is very familiar with Kiffin and he knows the Bucs’ defense will be much better prepared for the spread offense look because it caught the Jets somewhat by surprise.

However, Edwards is not ready to completely abandon the run, because he says you need to keep the defense honest.  Plus, he said as the Chiefs move into the colder months of the season, exclusively throwing the ball becomes much more difficult when the temperature drops.

For now, they’ll continue with the spread offense since Thigpen appeared to excel last week.  Click to listen to Herm’s comments.
