On the day America learned somebody from the community organizing group ACORN attempted to register Mickey Mouse as a voter in Florida, the controversy over ACORN and allegations of voter fraud appear to be gaining momentum. Former Missouri U.S. Senator John Danforth (R-MO) spoke at the National Press Club in Washington about allegations of voter fraud in which ACORN is implicated.
Danforth, who is working with the McCain campaign, says he is calling on both the McCain and Obama campaigns to try to root out cases of voter fraud in battleground states like Missouri in places like St. Louis and Kansas City, where there have already been convictions of ACORN employees.
Danforth says these concerns go beyond who wins the election in November. They go to the whole integrity of the election and whether the American people will have confidence in the system to be able to move forward as one country. Danforth and his colleagues have written both campaigns to ask that they form teams to go into areas in which there are concerns about voter fraud … and to monitor what is going on.
As Danforth was bringing attention to the allegations of voter fraud, the Obama campaign was kicking off a voter registration effort in some of the battleground states. Responding to Repubican voter fraud concerns, Campaign Manager David Plouffe expressed his view that Republicans are trying to make it harder to vote: "I do think that a lot of their noise they’re trying to create here is in service of creating a smoke screen because we have no doubt that their efforts at suppression and intimidation are going to be unprecedented."
