The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI are investigating in the burning of a mosque sign in Joplin.

Someone set the sign for the Islamic Society of Joplin on fire early Thursday. FBI officials are calling the act a hate crime.

Jasper County Sheriff’s Corporal Brandy Richardson said that society members are used to some hostile behavior, but that the sign burning has set a new tone. The mosque put up the sign two months ago to better fit in the community. It reads "Islamic Society of Joplin" in English and Arabic.
