Charge filed after assault proves fatal

September 29, 2008 By admin Leave a Comment

A Macon man is facing a manslaughter charge, after the man he punched on Friday afternoon, died Saturday morning.

Robert Wayman, 27, is being held on $100,000 cash-only bond.  He is charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Witnesses told Macon Police, Wayman punched Francis Hathaway, 59. Officers found Hathaway laying in the street. Police and ambulance personnel administered first aid. Hathaway was later flown to a Columbia hospital, where he died Saturday.

Macon Police Chief Steve Olinger said they still aren’t sure why Wayman punched Hathaway.

Olinger said Wayman turned himself in on Friday, and was initially charged with 2nd degree assault. When authorities learned of Hathaway’s death they upgraded the charge to involuntary manslaughter. An autopsy on Francis Hathaway will take place this week.
