The Attorney General’s office is expecting more consumer complaints about political robo-calls as the November election approaches. Federal law requires any organization using pre-recorded messages, or robo calls, to clearly identify, at least once, who is initiating the call and then give a phone number or address to contact to get off the list.
Attorney General Jay Nixon has sent letters to registered political campaign committees reiterating those requirements. The Attorney General’s office will aggressively prosecute anyone breaking the law, said Spokesman John Fougere.
"We work closely with Missourians who file complaints with our office to first identify and pursue action if need be against those who make these illegal robo calls," he said. "Taking on anonymous telemarketers is something our office has done quite well for the last seven years since the No Call Law in Missouri went into effect in 2000."
The Attorney General’s office is encouraging consumers to report robo calls violating the law.
"We can immediately get the conduct stopped," Fougere said. "If there’s somebody out there who is engaging in these illegal robo calls and we get a great number of complaints and we’re able to go to court and get an injunction that would stop that illegal activity immediately."
