Eckstein hurts former team with two hits, two RBI

September 2, 2008 By admin Leave a Comment

David Eckstein drove over to the ballpark in Arizona with Russ Springer and Ryan Franklin.  He doesn’t have a place to live since being traded from Toronto just a day ago, so he had to stay at the Cardinals’ team hotel.

After grabbing a lift from his former teammates, Eckstein hurt the Cardinals’ bullpen in an 8-6 Arizona win.  In Eckstein’s first game with Arizona, he went 2 for 4 and drove in the go ahead run in the 7th inning as the D-backs beat the Cardinals 8-6 handing them their fourth loss in  a row.

Eckstein was added to the D-backs roster and is playing second base for Orlando Hudson who is out for the year with a wrist injury.  The D-backs needed some veteran leadership as they fight for the NL West.

It was a wild offensive day as each team hit four home runs including Albert Pujols’ 30th of the year.  Arizona’s Stephen Drew had five hits including hitting for the cycle which Adrian Beltre did for Seattle making it the first time in 88 years two players have hit for the cycle.

Bad news for Joe Mather.  After homering earlier in the game, Mather tried to check his swing and sprained his wrist.  It’s likely, he’ll be out for the year.
