Less than three months after she said the state’s ethanol mandate for gasoline was a short-run way to establish a market for renewable fuels, Governor candidate Sarah Steelman is calling for repeal of that mandate.

Steelman has chosen a busy Springfield street side for her announcement that "within 100 days of being elected Governor, I will do everything in my power to repeal the ethanol mandate in Missouri."

She says the law requiring ten percent of almost all Missouri gasoline contain ethanol has had unintended consequences. She says it has produced higher food prices and higher costs for farmers since going into effect January 1.

Steelman says she does not oppose the development of alternative fuels. But she says the free market should determine the issue, not a government mandate.
