Three run homer beats Cardinals

May 21, 2008 By admin Leave a Comment

The Cardinals scored two runs in the 2 nd inning, an RBI double for Glaus, and an RBI for Adam Kennedy off of Greg Maddux and Joel Piniero worked out of a couple of jams, but gave up a three run homer to Kevin Kouzmanoff and the Cardinals lose 3-2.

The Padres ran themselves out of scoring opportunities.

First, in the second inning the Padres had runners on first and third with no outs and didn’t come home on a ground out, then got thrown out on a strike ’em out, throw out double play. In the fifth, the Padres had second and third with one out and failed to score.  Khalil Greene could have scored on a Scott Hairston double, but was held at third before the side got retired.

In the sixth, Piniero made a mistake that cost him.  Piniero walked two batters and with two outs gave up the home run on a hanging curveball that Kouzmanoff sent to straight away centerfield.

After that the Cardinals were unable to mount much offense, getting just two singles in the last three innings.  Trevor Hoffman picked up his 9 th save.  The Cards remain two games behind the Cubs in the NL Central.
