At least 12 people are dead after tornadoes touched down near Seneca in southwest Missouri. The 12 are among almost two dozen people killed in severe weather that struck Missouri, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.

In Missouri, at least 19 people in Newton County were hospitalized as a result of the twisters, which destroyed or damaged homes and businesses. The extent of all the injuries is not known. Rescue crews are digging through the rubble of destroyed structures as they search for more victims.

The National Weather Service reports at least eight tornadoes were spawned in Oklahoma with several blasting into Missouri.
