I knew when Pirates starter Tom Gorzelanny walked Joel Pineiro in the 5 th inning with one out, that the Cardinals would hurt the Pirates for that mistake as the Cardinals won 6-2

Brian Barton got the offense going with a two-run single in the Cards’ three-run fifth, and that was all starter Joel Pineiro needed as he limited the Pirates to one run on four hits over seven frames and cruised to his first victory of the season.

Gorzelanny’s actually loaded the bases with three walks. Brian Barton hit a two-run single and Albert Pujols followed with an RBI single, giving the Cardinals a 3-1 lead.

The Cards added two runs in the 6 th inning against Pirates reliever Phil Dumatrait. Brendan Ryan, just called up this week had an RBI single, and Skip Schumaker stroked an RBI double.   The teams traded runs in the 9 th inning.

The Cards now head home to open a nine-game homestand with Houston this weekend, followed by Cincinnati and then Chicago next weekend.  The Cardinals are just beginning a stretch of 13 straight games against Central Division foes and are 4-4 so far.
