The top aide to State Treasurer Sarah Steelman (R-MO) has changed his mind about doing his state job voluntarily while he is a paid employee of Steelman’s campaign for Governor. Deputy Treasurer Doug Gaston now says he’ll go on unpaid leave from his state job and do campaign work until next Monday when he’ll go back to his taxpayer-paid job fulltime.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported last week that Gaston had continued drawing his state paycheck while doing fulltime campaign work for Steelman. He told the newspaper he was using vacation time to work on the campaign and would take care of his state job on a volunteer basis when his vacation time ran out.
Steelman has told the Post-Dispatch that Gaston has not campaigned on state time.
