Things are beginning to look bleak for a proposal to make it harder for drunk drivers to drive without suspended or revoked licenses.
A tougher ignition interlock law has been waiting for debate in the House for almost a month. It says a person whose lost a driver’s license because of drunk driving for a second time cannot get a license back for at least a month and must put an interlock device on the vehicle..
Deborah Coffey, who works for one of the 80 interlock providers in Missouri, says the devices have gone through several improvements and the latest one is designed to make sure the offender is the one who takes the test. She says a new interlock has a photo-ID system that takes pictures of the person who is using the interlock.
She says judges asked for the photo ID feature.
Coffey says the newest devices also challenge drivers who drink WHILE driving—by requiring random tests.
A House committee has unanimously recommended approval of the bill. It’s been on the House debate list since March 27th but has yet to come up. Even if it clears the House in a few days, time is short to get it through the Senate
